About Us

Weymouth Hospital was founded in 1922 by local resident Dr. George Emerson. That 20-bed cottage hospital, renamed South Shore Hospital in 1945, was the foundation of South Shore Health: today, the largest independent health system in Southeastern Massachusetts. South Shore Health is a not-for-profit, charitable health system offering primary and specialty care; hospital care; home health and community care; emergency and urgent care; and preventative and wellness services.

South Shore Health provides care in more than 20 locations across the region and includes the following entities: South Shore Hospital, South Shore Medical Center, South Shore Visiting Nurse Association, Health Express, South Shore EMS, Friends of South Shore Health, and South Shore Health Foundation. We also work with academic medical centers in Boston to bring world-leading medical care to our community. Our partners include Boston Children’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Aspire Health Alliance.

Local Access to Renowned Cancer Care

The Cancer Center at South Shore Health provides exceptional cancer care right here, on the South Shore. Our clinical team includes board-certified and fellowship-trained medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and surgeons, as well as oncology-certified nurses.

The unique collaboration among the three organizations—comprised of Brigham and Women’s surgeons, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's medical and radiation oncologists, and South Shore Health’s radiologists and pathologists—helps to establish a coordinated, comprehensive approach to care.

  • The Cancer Center was built in 2009 and recently underwent an extensive renovation to expand access to care and enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Services include radiation therapy, medical oncology, breast health education, surgical oncology, diagnostic imaging, counseling/emotional support services, nutrition coaching, and more.
  • On an average day, more than 700 patients visit the Cancer Center.
  • The Cancer Center provides approximately 2,400 screening and diagnostic mammograms per month (as of June 2022).
