As a long-time employee of South Shore Health, I remember The Cancer Center at South Shore Health being built. Employees were invited to sign the final steel beam to be placed at what was called a "topping off" ceremony. I remember signing the beam and hoping for the day that Cancer Centers were no longer needed. On March 2, 2022, my husband had received a diagnosis of tonsil cancer, and our lives were changes in an instant. He was thrown into a world of doctor's appointments, scans, biopsies and blood tests. After 33 radiation treatments, sleepless nights, many tears, losing over 40 pounds, successfully avoiding a feeding tube and working full-time through it all my husband received his last radiation treatment on June 17, 2022, and has been cancer free ever since. I would be lying if I said the road was easy. Throughout his treatment I felt so lucky that The Cancer Center that I watched being built so many years before was available to him to receive his care so close to our home. As a result, my husband and I are once again participating in the Lace Up for Cancer walk to benefit the Cancer Center at South Shore Health!
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a life-changing event that I would not wish on anyone. The Cancer Center is here for our community every step of the way. Funds will benefit cancer prevention and education efforts, expand access to screening, and invest in cutting-edge technology for cancer care services at South Shore Health. Every day, nearly 700 patients receive specialized care that is as comprehensive as it is convenient—from diagnostic imaging to treatment to compassionate support—all right here in Weymouth.
