About The Campaign
An accident. A stroke. An infection. A heart attack. A life-altering diagnosis. At times like these, local access to expert critical care services isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity.
The Richard and Joann Aubut Critical Care Unit (CCU) at South Shore Hospital opened in October 2017 to meet our community’s growing need for local access to advanced critical care services. Our highly skilled team of physicians, nurses, and other caregivers provides intensive care to adults with significant injuries, complex illnesses, or after major surgery.
Our new CCU features 24 private rooms large enough to accommodate the sophisticated technology required to save and sustain lives. The unit also features comfortable space for family members so they may stay close to their loved ones.
Our CCU is part of a $62 million construction project that also involves renovating South Shore Hospital’s former critical care area on the sixth floor of the Pratt Building into a 24-bed patient care unit. This project will begin in late Fall 2017.
Our construction project is central to the provision of trauma and advanced surgical services and makes it possible for South Shore Hospital to provide a level of critical care services unavailable elsewhere in our region. The only way we may fully fund our ambitious construction and renovation project is through donations from supporters like you.

Advancing Technology
The pace of advancement in clinical technology—including surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic techniques and equipment—is astounding. A successful Campaign ensures our ability to acquire world-class medical equipment and technology.
Enhancing Programs
Education and prevention are fast replacing the standard practice of treating illness in the hospital. Home health care is a key part of the movement to lower healthcare costs, minimize complications, avoid hospital readmissions, and reach recovery goals, all with the patients’ ultimate health in mind.
Some of our Home and Community Care programs your gift to Mission the Campaign will support:
- First Day Home. A program for patients who do not have a caregiver at home. A nurse spends the first day in the patient’s home reviewing medications, reinforcing medical instructions, evaluating living conditions and making the home safer.
- Hospice Care. Hospice of the South Shore provides compassionate and dignified end-of-life care and bereavement services for 500 patients and their loved ones annually.
- South Shore VNA. Our visiting nurses help prevent complications and unnecessary re-hospitalizations by ensuring a safe home environment, proper management of medications, and support for families caring for loved ones at home.
Promoting Healthy Communities
South Shore Health System strongly believes in the importance of building healthier communities. But your help is needed.
In February 2016, we completed a formal Community Health Needs Assessment and have developed a plan to address the following public health priorities:
- Access to health services
- Behavioral health (including substance use disorder)
- Cardiovascular health

- Promote wellness in vulnerable populations
- Improve the prevention and management of chronic disease
